The skin is our first barrier to infection and significant injury. Dry skin conditions can increase health risks. One suggestion for moisturizing is to apply organic, extra virgin, cold-pressed, olive oil directly to the skin or add it to bath water. Another option would be to use organic, unrefined coconut oil topically. Either of these oils could be applied at night to keep from getting them on your clothing.
It’s also important to remember that one of the secrets to good health is decreasing the number of toxins to which you are exposed. Many unwanted chemicals enter your body through your skin. Hair products, makeup, and lotions are full of these chemicals. To learn more about the chemicals that may be in your skin and hair care products, I recommend you visit www.cosmeticsdatabase.com.
Blessings and best of health,

Chemical toxins surround us daily. They enter our bodies by inhalation, ingestion or absorption through our skin. One group of chemicals that we are commonly exposed to is pesticides. They have a strong link to a variety of hormonal, neurological and immune diseases.
Many pesticides have estrogen-like properties. They bind to estrogen receptors in our bodies and literally cause the same effects that too much estrogen does. In women, this can lead to weight gain around the hips and thighs or menstrual irregularities. In men, it can cause enlargement of the prostate and possibly contribute to the development of prostate cancer. Chemicals in this class have also been linked to Parkinson’s disease, miscarriages and other cancers in adults and children.
If you can’t avoid exposure, remember that you must have a plan to periodically detoxify. Ridding your body of harmful chemicals can often be accomplished through a combination of supplements to enhance the clearance of these substances by your liver and kidneys. But before you use pesticides, see if there are safer alternatives. In most cases there are. One excellent resource is to visit the website www.beyondpesticides.org and click on the tab that says, “Have a Pest Problem?” I think you’ll find it very helpful.
Wishing you the best of health,
Dr. Bernui

The fall is here and winter is around the corner. While many people are thankful for the cooler weather and the beautiful foliage, many others actually dread this time of year. Two common reasons for this sentiment are that the decrease in daylight causes some people to become depressed and the onset of winter often brings with it an increase in sickness. What if there was an effective, inexpensive and nontoxic way to decrease or eliminate the impact of both of these problems? Would you be interested? If so, read on. I think you’ll find the following information very helpful.
Seasonal affective disorder or S.A.D. is a common mood disturbance during the winter months characterized by depression, fatigue and lack of motivation. While many in healthcare treat this problem with the seasonal use of prescription antidepressants, I think you should consider another solution. That is, the appropriate use of vitamin D.
In addition, if you’d like to supercharge your immune system so you could more effectively prevent the flu or another infection, supplementing with vitamin D may again be your best answer. There is even some evidence that large doses of vitamin D can stop the flu in its tracks.
Vitamin D plays an important role in the balance of neurotransmitters that are made in our bodies and mediate our moods. It’s also extremely important for boosting immune system function. One of the most powerful anti-cancer nutrients that exists is vitamin D. Interestingly, ninety-five per cent of the patients that I see are vitamin D deficient. How do I know? Because I routinely test their levels.
It’s not enough to know that your vitamin D level is in the “normal range”. First, there are various types of vitamin D that can be tested in the blood. The best one to test for is known as the level of “25 hydroxy vitamin D”.
Second, standard laboratory normal ranges cannot be trusted because new scientific findings often outpace recommendations for changing the reference ranges at the labs. That being said, the level of “25 hydroxy vitamin D” that I think everyone should maintain is between 50 and 70 ng/dl.
Vitamin D itself also comes in a couple of different forms. The best type of vitamin D supplement is one that contains the biologically active form of vitamin D, known as D3. Children will often require 1000 to 2000 IUs per day, whereas adults may require 4000 to 10,000 IUs daily. It’s important to be followed by a healthcare provider because with this vitamin it is possible to get too much. Regular testing can ensure that you maintain optimal but nontoxic levels.
Don’t dread the change of seasons or the ills that come with winter! Instead, make sure you get adequate exercise, rest, and of course, vitamin D.
Many blessings and good health,
Dr. Bernui

Daytime stress has a tendency to follow us home in the form of racing thoughts and endless to-do lists. According to the National Sleep Foundation’s 2008 “Sleep in America” poll, the average time spent sleeping is only 6 hours and 40 minutes; but the recommended amount of sleep for adults is 7 to 9 hours each night.
Two things that you can do to encourage a good night’s sleep are: taking a hot bath and using essential oils. The hot bath before bed heats up your body’s core and as it cools it triggers a biological function that your body associates with being at rest. Adding 3 to 4 drops of essential oils to the bath water will enhance this effect. The scent of essential oils like lavender and chamomile are scientifically proven to help provide a better night’s sleep.
Sweet dreams,

It has amazed me how often people as young as in their thirties will accept feeling badly for an extended period of time simply because they feel they’re “getting older”. One of my dearest patients was 85 years old when she came to the office complaining of being a “little stiff”. She had only been in my office about twice a year over the prior two years but after recognizing that she had a relatively minor but nagging problem she remarked, “I turned 83 and I’m falling apart!” Oh that we would all make it to 85 before expressing that sentiment.
At age 85 and certainly earlier many people would have reason to attribute their maladies to aging. However, most people fail to recognize many of the factors that can accelerate the aging process.
We live in a toxic world! If you live at the beach and park your car outside without a cover, the paint will look old and rust will develop much more quickly than it would if you parked it in a garage and put something over it. That being said, what might you do to improve your condition?
One of the primary ways that toxins can affect your body is by negatively impacting your endocrine or hormone system. Whether you’re male or female, young or old, symptoms of apathy, low energy, decreased sex drive, PMS or mood disturbances among other things could all be related to hormonal imbalances.
Correcting hormonal imbalances is sometimes straightforward and sometimes it’s not. It’s important to recognize that toxins and chemical compounds with hormonal effects (that we’re all exposed to) can be the root cause of one’s hormonal disturbance. To get the maximum benefit from treatment, the issue of toxic load must be addressed.
Are you aware of the substances in your home that you apply, consume, breathe or otherwise assimilate that may be contributing to a problem? Is hormone balancing without detoxification effective? Does detoxification without hormone balancing work well? Is there anything you can do on your own? Although the answers are too detailed to write about here, these and other issues will be discussed in detail at our two upcoming seminars. Learn how to look and live younger! We hope you will join us.

In last week’s health tip I reminded you that cancer is now the leading cause of death in our country. I also mentioned that I believed most cancers were caused by viruses and I related some of the evidence supporting that belief. Since our immune systems are responsible for fighting viruses, an effective strategy to prevent or cure cancer would then involve enhancing immune system function. Ridding our bodies of toxins, the process known as detoxification, is a key to accomplishing that objective.
Heavy metals, chemicals, bacteria, electromagnetic radiation, genetically modified foods, emotional and spiritual stressors are all categories of toxins with which our bodies must contend. We often use a combination of therapies including nutritional supplements, infrared sauna, colon hydrotherapy and intravenous treatments to help remove many of these toxins. But if you asked me to name one thing that I believed to be the most important step in detoxifying and boosting immune function; the answer would have to be: dealing with a lack of forgiveness. Addressing this one problem, even though it won’t rid your body of ALL toxins, can make a dramatic difference in your health.
Many of you have heard me say that stress CAN kill you. The mechanism responsible for making stress so devastating is that it suppresses immune system function. Ask yourself how many people with cancer that you’ve known, were diagnosed after a period of prolonged or intense stress. Dr. Esther Sternberg, a rheumatologist and NIH researcher is one of the leading experts in the world on stress and its impact on the immune system. Her book, “The Balance Within”, published in 2000 reveals the research that supports her assertions. It’s been my experience and the experience of many of my patients that dealing with a lack of forgiveness provides relief from one of the most powerful stressors anyone will ever face. Stress from this problem can be very intense, it can last a long time and if often goes unrecognized as a significant factor in the development of chronic disease.
Forgiveness isn’t necessarily easy, but it is necessary. An excellent resource on this topic that provides insight and a plan is the book by R.T. Kendall called “Total Forgiveness”. He also has a follow-up book which deals with the even more difficult topic of forgiving one’s self. It’s entitled “Forgiving Yourself Totally”.
I encourage you to take a thoughtful personal inventory. You may be affected more than you think and the effects can ripple through your family for generations. Forgiving someone is like freeing them from a debt they can never repay and then realizing that the one you really freed, was yourself.
Blessings and Good Health,
Dr. Bernui

When president Richard Nixon launched the war on cancer in the 1970s, cancer was the third leading cause of death in our country. Now more than thirty years later, it is the number one killer. From toddlers to senior adults, no single group is immune. Why hasn’t it been stopped? What went wrong?
I believe the answer to these questions lies, in part, with a lack of recognition that many cancers have a known cause. You’ve probably seen the commercials for Gardasil, the relatively new cervical cancer vaccine. On many of those commercials, it is clearly stated that “human papilloma virus causes cervical cancer”. This fact is well known and there’s really no disputing it. My personal belief is that the vast majority of cancers are viral. We know there are lymphoma, sarcoma and leukemia viruses in cows, cats and other animals – why not humans?
All known carcinogens have at least one thing in common. They all suppress your immune system. It’s obvious that anyone with a suppressed immune system is more vulnerable to viral activation. Take, for example, what happened to AIDS patients in the 1980s. They developed multiple types of cancers – and many of them unusual or rare cancers. You know that we live in a toxic world that’s full of immune-suppressing substances. So how do you prevent cancer? Boost your immune system!
Boosting your immune system is accomplished through systematically detoxifying your body by using nutritional supplements, dietary intervention and cleansing techniques. In next week’s health tip I’ll talk more specifically about how this can be done. Stay tuned. I think you’ll be surprised when you learn what I believe may be the single most important detoxification step you can take.
Blessings and good health,
Dr. Bernui
