About Basha Bekele
Tucked in the Sidama region of Southern Ethiopia lies a drying station run by Basha Bekele. Basha’s father used to manage a co-op in Bombe before the government made it possible for small landowners to get export licenses. Now, Basha and his father grow their own coffee on forested plots and operate collection sites in the area. Other growers bring their cherries to Basha. With prices already high, he maintained a practice that wasn’t normally seen — delivering second payments to the growers once the coffee sold.
This coffee is very high-grown, over 7,500ft, meaning the coffee grows slower allowing for more time for nutrients to be absorbed from the air and soil. This translates into an incredibly complex and flavorful final cup. In addition, Basha exclusively uses the dry process (aka natural) and experiments with fermentation and floats the cherries before drying on raised beds.
All of this careful growing, picking and processing showcases the incredible offering. We taste juicy pineapple, delicately floral lavender and ripe stone fruits. This coffee from Basha Bekele is truly a rare and special jewel from the birthplace of coffee.
